Vitamins:
Vitamins are important for the health of a chihuahua. We give our dogs the following each day:
- One ml of a vitamin mixture which consists of Sanasol, B-tonin and Weifa C. We generally prepare this in a 20 ml beaker where we take a teaspoon of Weifa C, 1 ml of Sanasol, 1 ml of B-tonin and the rest water. Each dog receives approximately 1 ml using a syringe and the rest is added to the drinking water.
- Omega 3-6-9. One drop on the tongue from a capsule.
- Calcium supplement in the form of calcium lactate.
- Glucovett which is a mixture of glucosamine, condroitin and MSM. This is to aid the lubrication of the joints.
Home made food:
Our dogs main diet is homemade food. First we try to learn all our puppies to try to eat vegetables (especially carrots) and fruit. For dinner, we try to vary the diet a bit so that they do not get the same type of dinner each day (to avoid food boredom). Below is a brief description of the types of homemade food we give our dogs:
- Ground beef/vegetable mixture: One cup ground beef or fine ground beef, one cup rice (preferably wild rice), cooked carrots, one egg, som whipping cream, salt and pepper all mixed and baked in the oven at 225 oC for approximately 45 - 60 minutes (depending on how much is made).
- Grilled or cooked chicken. For grilling, add salt and pepper. Grill in oven at 200 oC for 2 hours. For cooking, add salt and pepper. Place in pot with water above the chicken level and cook for XX hours. Remember not to give the dogs chicken bone since this can pierce the stomach wall.
- Cooked Ox tails. Cook ox tails in water until the meat starts to separate from the bone.
- Cooked or fried ox liver.
- Deer or elg meat.
- Roast beef.
Dog food:
Yes, we also do give our dogs "dog food". Popular brands are Royal Canine Junior (for pups), Royal Canine Sensible (for those a bit stomach sensitive), Royal Canine Light (for those who need to shed some weight), Eukanuba Puppy Junior (for pups).
Other Snacks:
- Swedish Meat Balls (Mammas Ferdiglagde kjøttboller) bought in Sweden.
- Dried cod (the type for human consumption only). Cost about kr. 300/kg.
- Baby food: Calf meat balls manufactured by "Semper", also bought in Sweden.
- Baby food: Chicken and vegetables, calf meat and vegetables or beef and vegetables. All manufactured by Semper and all originally intended for babies but our dogs love it. It is also easy to feed to those who need to put on some more weight since you can feed the puppies or dogs using a spoon or syringe.
- Schmackos. Recommended only as a treat.
- Go'biten liver or MaxDog liver. We use this only as a reward during training.
And remember, don't go over to a new food sort too abruptly since this can cause stomach and digestive problems. Do it gradually.
Also, dogs need constant access to clean water.
It is important to clean water and dog dishes daily.
And finally, never give a dog chocolate since this is poisonous.
